Between acceptance and dislike: the intricacy of cross-cultural contacts while travelling

Today travelling is a global phenomenon. Many journeys involve cross-cultural contacts, often between cultures which are very remote from each other. Some questions arise: does the contemporary traveller expect cross-cultural contacts and how does he/she imagine such interactions? These seemingly simple questions enable us to reflect on the intentionality and complexity of cross-cultural interactions, the main issue discussed in the article. The author draws the reader's attention to the social roles assumed by the modern traveller, as well as the theoretical scenarios of cross-cultural contact, analyzing its symmetric and asymmetric forms

Relations between Tourism and Sport in the Context of Tourism as an Academic Discipline

The specific objective of the paper is to discuss the mutual relations between tourism and sport and, in a wider context, to draw the reader’s attention to the potentially excessive range of research goals in tourism as a discipline. Within the scope of discussion, the author looks at tourism as a social activity and a conceptual and research subject. Research questions, the signposts of intellectual debate, come down to whether tourism shares any common areas with sport (in its widest sense). If so, is such activity still tourism activity? Or perhaps these types of ‘sport-tourist’ activities should be excluded from discussion on tourism as an academic discipline because of their non-tourist character? The author assumes that there is an exploratory and cognitive zone between these two areas of social activity, going beyond both tourism and sport. Zastosowanie „metod mieszanych” do badania zachowań turystów w mieście – przykład konceptualizacji i wykorzystania (artykuł dyskusyjny)

Opracowanie mieści się w kategoriach konceptualno-metodologicznego artykułu dyskusyjnego. Celem pracy jest dyskusja na temat zastosowania „metod mieszanych” (mixed methods research) w polskich badaniach turystycznych, w szczególności zachowań turystów w mieście. Artykuł składa się z części omawiającej zestaw metod wykorzystanych do badania zachowań turystów oraz prezentującej wyniki badań – zastosowania zaproponowanego algorytmu postępowania. Autorzy przyjmując podejście behawioralne proponują zastosowanie metody quasi-eksperymentu połączonego z wykorzystaniem technik rejestracji ruchu GPS oraz metod jakościowych badań socjologicznych. W opracowaniu podejmuje się dyskusję literaturową dotyczącą tzw. mixed method research, omawia zaproponowany algorytm postępowania badawczego oraz wyciąga wnioski wynikające z zastosowania tego typu metod łącznie.Niniejsza praca została sfinansowana ze środków Narodowego Centrum Nauki: grant UMO-2011/03/B/HS4/01171

The application of GIS and GPS methods together with qualitative sociological methods is one of the current fields of discussion in studies of human behaviour in space. The authors ask about the justification, manner and value of using the ‘triad’: quantitative GIS measurement methods – qualitative sociological methods – quasi-experiment. This article fits into the category of a conceptual-discursive article. Its aim is to discuss the application of ‘mixed methods’ in research concerning tourist behaviours, especially in the city. The article consists of a part presenting a set of methods used to study such behaviours and a part discussing the results concerning the application of a proposed research procedure algorithm. The authors take a behavioural approach and propose using a quasi-experimental method combined with techniques of mobility monitoring (GPS), and the qualitative methods used in sociological research. The article presents a discussion concerning ‘mixed methods’, discusses a proposed algorithm of research procedure and presents conclusions following the joint application of these methods

Te z pozoru proste pytania prowadzą do zastanowienia się nad intencjonalnością i złożonością kontaktów międzykulturowych, co jest zasadniczym celem opracowania. W artykule zwraca się uwagę na role społeczne, jakie towarzyszą współczesnemu podróżnikowi oraz teoretyczne scenariusze kontaktu interkulturowego analizujące jego symetryczną i asymetryczną postać

Turyści w strukturze miast: obraz konfliktu czy koegzystencji? – rozważania na podstawie badań city users w dwóch miastach

The main aim of this paper is to discuss the role of tourist in the spatial and social structures of the modern large Polish cities. Following questions were formulated: what areas of activity and ways of activity tourists choose in the city? What image of the city in the minds of tourists remain after leaving? What kind of attitudes have residents the tourists? Is conflict possible between them? Presented results provoke to conclusion that contemporary city is indeed changing under tourist influence. However these changes don’t have to be negative. Tourists entrance to the city can provoke to development of city districts and to improve everyday life of their residents.Zasadniczym celem opracowania jest podjęcie dyskusji nad rolą turysty w strukturach przestrzennych i społecznych współczesnego dużego polskiego miasta. Sformułowano następujące pytania: jakie obszary aktywności oraz dziedziny aktywności w mieście wybierają turyści? jakie obrazy miasta w świadomości turystów pozostają po jego opuszczeniu? jaki jest odbiór turystów przez mieszkańców miast i czy prawdopodobny jest konflikt użytkowania miasta pomiędzy tymi społecznościami? Zaprezentowane wyniki badań prowadzą do konkluzji, że współczesne miasto faktycznie zmienia się pod wpływem turystów. Jednakże obraz tych zmian wcale nie musi wiązać się ze zmianą negatywną. Wejście turysty do miasta może prowokować do rozwoju obszarów i poprawy codziennego życia samych mieszkańców
